- SportsMed was honored to host a retirement reception for Dr. Higginbotham on March 15, 2012. His wife Mary and children attended as well as his partners and guests including neighbors, numerous Huntsville physicians, Blue Cross Blue Shield executives, city officials and television co-hosts.
Dr. Higginbotham began medical practice in Huntsville in 1970 and has served at SportsMed since 1997. He recently served as Medical Chairman for the Madison County Disaster Preparedness Committee, a Trustee for the Madison County Medical Society, a Blue Cross Physician Advisor for the 5th Congressional district and Chairman of the Physician Advisory Board at Crestwood Medical Center.
We wish him a happy retirement and thank him for a job well done!
- Dr. Curt Freudenberger, at SportsMED Orthopaedic Surgery and Spine Center, implanted the first FDA approved cervical artificial disk in Huntsville, AL on November 3, 2009. The disk, called the Prestige, manufactured by Medtronic, based out of Memphis, TN was implanted in a 33 year old female. The Prestige cervical disk arthroplasty is intended to preserve a patient’s full range of motion, reduce return to work time, and reduce secondary surgeries due to previously failed fusions. There are certain parameters that qualify a patient to be a recipient of the Prestige. A patient must not have severe degenerative changes or deformity of their cervical spine. - Drs. Michael Cosgrove, Brett Franklin, and James P. Martens have joined the physician staff at SportsMED. Dr. Cosgrove specializes in pain management, Dr. Franklin in sports medicine, and Dr. Matens specializes in foot and ankle surgeries.

- SportsMED’s radiology department has received the American College of Radiology (ACR) accreditation seal for our Huntsville MRI Facility. Only 3 other MRI facilities in Madison County have received this accreditation. SportsMED voluntarily went through a rigorous review process to be sure it meets nationally accepted standards. The ACR accreditation seal means our personnel are well qualified, through education and certification, to perform and interpret your medical images and administer your radiation therapy treatments. The equipment is appropriate for the test you will receive, and the facility meets or exceeds quality assurance and safety guidelines. SportsMED’s MRI machine is located in the Huntsville clinic.
