The top of the shoulder joint is called the acromion. The acromioclavicular joint, or AC joint, is where the acromion meets the collarbone. If the subacromial space is narrowed, the rotator cuff may become pinched and cause pain and irritation. To help alleviate the pain, the shoulder surgeon can shave the under surface of the acromion, called an arthroscopic acromioplasty or decompression, to give the rotator cuff more room to move. The procedure occasionally is accompanied by a distal clavicle resection or debridement as part of a subacromial decompression.
