SportsMED Orthopaedic Surgery and Spine Center is a complete orthopedic practice committed to the diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and prevention of injuries and diseases of the musculoskeletal system. SportsMED was founded in 1995 as a two physician practice, but has since grown into a complete orthopedic practice with 20 physicians covering ten subspecialties of orthopedic medicine, with locations in Huntsville, Madison, Athens, and Decatur. Highly qualified physicians, fully equipped facilities, skilled support staffs, and four convenient locations combine to create the right environment for orthopedic excellence. Javier A. Reto, M.D.

Javier A. Reto, M.D.


Dr. Reto is an orthopaedic spine surgeon specializing in spine deformity, degenerative spine surgery, adult and adolescent scoliosis, as well as failed back surgeries. He received his undergraduate degree in 1995 from the University of Chicago, where he double majored in applied mathematics and chemistry. He attended medical school at the University of Illinois, Chicago College of Medicine and remained there for his orthopaedic residency from 2004-2009. Following residency, he completed a year long spine fellowship at the Twin Cities Spine Center in Minneapolis, MN. Dr. Reto, who is fluent in spanish, joined the SportsMED team in 2013 after relocating from Marietta, GA where he worked for Pinnacle Orthopedics.

Dr. Reto is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and is on the active staff at Crestwood Medical Center.

Beatriz Garcia-Cardona, M.D.



Dr. Garcia-Cardona specializes in complex flat foot reconstructions, bunion corrections, foot and ankle trauma, ankle joint replacements, arthroscopic procedures of the ankle, and all sports related foot and ankle injuries. Dr. Garcia-Cardona joined the Sportsmed team in 2013 after completing her foot and ankle fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She attended medical school at the Universidad Central Del Caribe School of Medicine in Bayamon, Puerto Rico followed by an orthopedic residency at the University of Puerto Rico in San Juan, where she was Chief Resident. She also obtained her bachelor of science degree in 2003 from the University of Puerto Rico. She is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. She graduated medical school with honors and held several leadership positions throughout her medical school and residency programs. Dr. Garcia-Cardona enjoys working as a volunteer, as she did in 2000 and 2002 with the Special Olympics, and participating in mission trips.

Milton W. Sterling II, D.P.M.

Dr. Milton W. Sterling


Dr. Milton W. Sterling II attended Oakwood College in Huntsville where he received a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Biochemistry, graduating Magna Cum Laude. He received his D.P.M. degree from Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine in Philadelphia and completed his Podiatric Surgical Residency at St. Vincent Medical Center in Jacksonville, Florida where he served as Chief Resident. Dr. Sterling has special interest and training in diabetic limb salvage and forefoot surgery. He is a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association and the Florida Podiatric Medical Association. Dr. Sterling is on the medical staff at Parkway Medical Center in Decatur, Crestwood Medical Center in Huntsville, and Madison Surgery in Madison. He is Board Certified in podiatric surgery.

John H. Walker, M.D.



Dr. Walker is an experienced orthopaedic surgeon specializing in treatment and surgery of the hand. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham. Dr. Walker completed an internship in Internal Medicine at Vanderbilt University. He then went on to complete his General Surgery Internship and his Orthopaedic Residency at the University of Alabama in Birmingham.

Dr. Walker is fellowship trained in hand surgery from the University of Alabama Hospital. He is Board Certified in both Orthopaedic and Hand Surgery and is a member of professional organizations in both disciplines.

Kendall Black, M.D.



Dr. Black has a General Practice of Orthopaedic Surgery, so that he evaluates all types of bone and joint problems. His special interests are in reconstruction of the upper extremity, hip and lower extremity in adults utilizing arthroscopic, open and joint replacement surgery, as indicated.

Dr. Black holds a B.S. from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa and received his M.D. degree from the Medical College of Alabama, Birmingham. After completing an Internship in Surgery and Medicine at University Hospital and Hillman Clinics in Birmingham, Dr. Black completed service in the United States Air Force. Upon completing specialty training in Orthopaedic Surgery at the Jacksonville Hospital and the College of Medicine at the University of Florida, he entered private practice in Huntsville in 1970. Dr. Black has attended post graduate courses in arthroscopy and total joint surgery.

At present he is serving on the Board of Directors of the American Cancer Society. He spearheads the development and continuous enhancement of SportsMED’s electronic medical record and digital radiology systems. He is an Assistant Clinical Professor in Surgery for the University of Alabama School of Medicine program in Huntsville.
