About Dr. Owen

Matthew T. Owen, MD is a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon at SportsMED Orthopedic Surgery & Spine Center specializing in sports medicine, shoulder and knee reconstruction, joint replacement, knee and shoulder injuries, and arthroscopy. Dr. Owen treats patients at the Huntsville, and Madison, Alabama locations.

Dr. Owen earned his bachelor’s degree with honors from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, where he was recognized for both academic and leadership accomplishments. He then obtained his medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham and completed an orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Alabama Medical Center.

During his training, Dr. Owen received specialized sports training at the University of Alabama, Andrews Sports Medicine and Children’s of Alabama, both in Birmingham. Dr. Owen then completed his training with a sports medicine and arthroscopic fellowship at the Taos Orthopedic Institute in Taos, New Mexico. His work experience includes serving as the team physician for the United States Ski and Snowboard Team, University of Alabama at Birmingham, New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas, New Mexico, and local high school teams.

Published in numerous peer-reviewed orthopedic journals, Dr. Owen is also an avid speaker at national meetings and a member of numerous orthopedic associations, including the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. Dr. Owen is on the staff and operates at Crestwood Medical Center in Huntsville, The Surgery Center of Huntsville, and Madison Surgery Center.
