Occupational Therapy Q & A

What is occupational therapy?

Occupational therapy (OT) is a multidisciplinary treatment designed to increase overall functioning, improve motor skills, and prevent disability in patients with orthopedic conditions and injuries.

The occupational therapists at SportsMED Orthopedic Surgery & Spine Center specialize in returning patients to their daily activities by addressing pain or mobility impairments of the hand, wrist, and elbow.

You may receive OT that’s specific to your real occupation, helping you relearn or improve on-the-job skills. However, OT isn’t limited to jobs; it’s also designed to improve your ability to engage in any type of meaningful activity.

The type of therapy you receive depends on your underlying condition and your personal goals. Some patients want to restore their ability to perform routine activities of daily living, while others want to get back to work or return to competitive sports.

What orthopedic conditions benefit from occupational therapy?

Any musculoskeletal condition that interferes with your ability to perform can benefit from OT, but this type of therapy is especially valuable when movement in your upper or lower extremities has been affected by an injury or disease.

These are a few examples of the many conditions that improve with occupational therapy:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Fractures
  • Dislocations
  • Tendinitis
  • Crush injuries
  • Ligament and tendon injuries
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Joint replacement

The team at SportsMED often prescribes OT following orthopedic surgery. Early intervention after surgery supports your full recovery.

What should I expect during occupational therapy?

Your occupational therapist at SportsMED thoroughly evaluates your condition and how it affects your ability to perform in daily life. After finishing the assessment, you talk about your goals and learn your therapist’s recommended interventions to reach your goals.

Your therapist then develops a rehabilitation plan that gradually builds your skills. The occupational therapists at SportsMED use state-of-the-art modalities and manual therapy to customize your program.

Your occupational therapy treatment may include structured activities, exercises, and training that’s specific to your goals, whether they’re related to work, self-care, recreation, or sports. If returning to play is your goal, your OT includes essential training.

Your occupational therapist may also design or recommend assistive devices or durable medical equipment (DME) to support your recovery and improve functioning. Your OT treatment may incorporate adaptation skills. For example, you may need to learn about new or unexpected safety issues you’ll face while recovering from an injury or surgery.
